Colorado Locoweed

Colorado Locoweed

2025

Somewhere along a Colorado roadside, locoweed blooms purple against the dust — overlooked by most, beloved by Laurie. She has always seen what others rush past. Thirty years in a classroom taught her that the quiet, humble things carry the most meaning, and when she finally walked into her studio full-time, she brought that conviction with her. This piece is its purest expression: a plant dismissed as a weed, rendered with the tenderness of a botanical illustrator and the boldness of someone who has nothing left to prove. The background is a palimpsest of a life well-read and well-traveled. Sheet music drifts beneath the blooms like an old melody half-remembered. A vintage map in crimson traces roads no longer driven. Text fragments surface and submerge — 'The wide world is all about you,' reads one — as if the collage itself is whispering encouragement. And anchoring it all, stenciled large across the left: 'FLY FREELY & BE FREE.' It is both declaration and invitation. This is what Laurie means when she calls her work a treasure hunt. Every viewer finds a different story inside it — a road trip, a song, a plant they once knew the name of. The locoweed stands rooted and radiant at the center of all of it, proof that the overlooked, given the right light, can become unforgettable.
